Optical model or coupled-channels calculation serves as an entrance to sophisticated calculation of nuclear data. It was a great contribution of Dr. Efrem Sh. Soukhovitsukii who has developed an excellent computation scheme which takes account of the low-lying collective nuclear structure in terms of the soft-rotator + vibrational model, and integrated it into the coupled-channels calculation. In Japan, we had a fortuitous experience with him in parametrization of the optical model potential (OMP) and to employ this methodology in nuclear data evaluation for JENDL. Firstly, we summarize our collaborative works with him in this paper. Secondly, let us have a discussion on a new parameterization of OMP which we obtained for light nuclei within his framework, quite recently. It was found that values of the potential parameters themselves are rather similar among different nuclei while the nuclear deformation describes one of the main characteristics of each isotopes.

Post fission time evolution calculation by FIFRELIN coupled with PHITS and DCHAIN

The Monte-Carlo code FIFRELIN was originally developed for the simulation of first chance fission of fissile nuclei. It can predict fission observables such as fragment yields and neutron yields accurately by using experimental data and databases. However, FIFRELIN cannot calculate remnant dose and decay heat considering delayed decay of fission fragments. Moreover, FIFRELIN can predict the energy spectra of neutrons and gammas but further transport calculation required generation of heavy external files. In this study, FIFRELIN was interfaced to radiation transport code PHITS to perform burn up calculation and particle transport calculation. Owing to the burn up calculation, decay heat and remnant dose were calculated for given irradiation condition and cooling period. Interface of particle transport calculation by PHITS and FIFRELIN can perform particle transport simulation based on the source term calculated by FIFRELIN.

A Review of quarkonia under strong magnetic fields

We review the properties of quarkonia under strong magnetic fields. The main phenomena are (i) mixing between different spin eigenstates, (ii) quark Landau levels and deformation of wave function, (iii) modification of $$bar{Q}Q$$ potential, and (iv) the motional Stark effect. For theoretical approaches, we review (i) constituent quark models, (ii) effective Lagrangians, (iii) QCD sum rules, and (iv) holographic approaches.

Mass spectrum and strong decays of tetraquark $$bar c bar s qq$$ states

The mass spectrum and strong decays of the S-wave $$bar c bar s qq$$ states are studied in the compact tetraquark scenario with the quark model. The model consists of the Coulomb, the linear confinement, and the hyperfine interactions. We calculate their decay amplitudes into the $$D^{-(*)}K^{(*)}$$ channels using the quark interchange method. The mass and decay width of the $$I(J^P)=1(0^+)$$ state are $$M = 2941$$ MeV and $$Gamma_X=26.6$$ MeV, respectively, which indicates that it might be a good candidate for the recently observed $$X^0(2900)$$ state. We also obtain an isospin partner state $$I(J^P)= 0(0^+)$$ with $$M =2649$$ MeV and $$Gamma_{Xto D^- K}= 48.1$$ MeV, respectively. Future experimental search for $$X(2649)$$ will be very helpful.

Relation between biomolecular dissociation and energy of secondary electrons generated in liquid water by fast heavy ions

Fundamental study of interaction between biomolecules and heavy ions in water is very important to predict an initial stage of radiation biological effects. A heavy ion irradiation experiment into droplet target assumed as a biological system in a vacuum was performed to measure production yields of cations and anions for glycine, which was ejected from the droplet target to the vacuum. However, the production mechanisms have been unknown. The PHITS code adapting ion track structure mode was used to analyze the production mechanisms from the dose evaluation at the surface between the vacuum and the water. It is found that induction yields of ionization and excitation, and dissociative electron attachment involved in the secondary electrons were correlated with the production yields of cations and anions of the glycine. The results provide us newly scientific insights to predict an initial stage of radiation biological effects.

The Joint Evaluated Fission and Fusion nuclear data library 3.3 is described. New evaluations for neutron-induced interactions with the major actinides $$^{235}$$U, $$^{238}$$U and $$^{239}$$Pu, on $$^{241}$$Am and $$^{23}$$Na, $$^{59}$$Ni, Cr, Cu, Zr, Cd, Hf, W, Au, Pb and Bi are presented. It includes new fission yileds, prompt fission neutron spectra and average number of neutrons per fission. In addition, new data for radioactive decay, thermal neutron scattering, gamma-ray emission, neutron activation, delayed neutrons and displacement damage are presented. JEFF-3.3 was complemented by files from the TENDL project. The libraries for photon, proton, deuteron, triton, helion and alpha-particle induced reactions are from TENDL-2017. The demands for uncertainty quantification in modeling led to many new covariance data. A comparison between results from model calculations using the JEFF-3.3 library and those from benchmark experiments for criticality, delayed neutron yields, shielding and decay heat, reveals that JEFF-3.3 is excellent for a wide range of nuclear technology applications, in particular nuclear energy.

For $$N=Z$$ nuclei, three-body model of inert core can provide an understanding of pairing correlations in the ground state and spin-isospin excitations. However, residual core-nucleon interactions can impact the core nucleus significantly. The effect of core excitations thus has to be included for the detailed understanding of the ground state and the spin-isospin properties. We solve the three-body problem including core vibrational states to obtain the ground state as well as the spin-excitations. By including the effect of core excitation, (a) magnetic moment, (b) the enegy difference between the first and the excited states, (c) B(M1) and B(GT), are improved. It was also found that the root mean squares of distances between proton and neutron, and the center of mass of valence prton and neutron and core slightly increase.

The $$^{235}$$U(n, f) cross section was measured at n_TOF relative to $$^{6}$$Li(n, t) and $$^{10}$$B(n, $$alpha$$), in a wide energy range (25 meV$$sim$$170 keV) with 1.5% systematic uncertainty, making use of a stack of six samples and six silicon detectors placed in the neutron beam. The present results indicate that the cross section in the 9$$sim$$18 keV neutron energy range is indeed overestimated by almost 5% in the recently released evaluated data files ENDF/B-VIII.0 and JEFF3.3. Furthermore, these new high-resolution data confirm the existence of resonance-like structures in the keV neutron energy region. From the present data, a value of 249.7$$pm$$1.4(stat)$$pm$$0.94(syst) b eV has been extracted for the cross section integral between 7.8 and 11 eV, confirming the value of 247.5$$pm$$3 b eV recently established as a standard.
